Rivonia in December smells like rain and braais — and on the sideboard, there should be a proper Christmas cake. Not a supermarket slab: a dark, dense, home-made brandy fruit-cake with glacé cherries, raisins and walnuts, matured until the flavours settle deep.
Ours bakes minutes away in Fourways from a treasured family recipe, one limited batch a year. Big ±2.1kg, 22–23cm, serving 20+ thin slices — enough for the family lunch in Edenburg and the office platter near Rivonia Village alike.
What's inside the cake
Dried fruit, glacé cherries, walnuts, butter, eggs, flour, sugar, brandy, sherry, cinnamon and mixed spice. Boiled-fruit method for extra moistness, baked low and slow with brandy, finished with brandy over the top, then wrapped and matured 2–4 weeks. One recipe, one generous ±2.1kg size (22–23cm) — serves 20+ thin slices. Contains gluten, egg, dairy, nuts and alcohol.
